Classic Fighters 2001

What do you do when your biennial grass roots warbird fly-in becomes so big and so popular that the public adopts it as their own? Well you just have no choice but to turn it into a major airshow! This is precisely how the Classic Fighters Easter Airshow was born. Held in the picturesque wine-growing province of Marlborough at the top end of New Zealand's South Island, the event has evolved into what has been broadly acknowledged as one of the best aviation entertainment spectacles yet seen in the Southern Hemisphere!

Schnellbomber

Envisaged by her designers as a fast medium bomber, the Junkers 88 became the Third Reich's multi-role combat aircraft. The versatile airframe performed most tasks demanded of it with distinction despite the fact that many of those roles were forced upon her by an increasingly hard pressed and overstretched Luftwaffe.

Cessna C-140

When first seeing "November Charlie Victor", one could not be blamed for thinking that they had entered the Bermuda triangle - a "time warp" if you like. Here is a 1948 vintage Cessna Model 140 aircraft looking exactly the same as it did the day it came out of the Wichita factory.

Registered as NC2436V (nee N2436V) and affectionately named "Boo-Boo" (after Yogi Bear's little friend), such was its pristine presentation that it was judged "Reserve Grand Champion" (Class B) at Oshkosh in 1985.

Focke-Wulf FW190D-13

ALAN GRUENING explains how authenticity is of prime importance in returning this rare Jumo powered German WW-II fighter to airworthiness.

Long considered to be the gem of Doug Champlin's collection at the CHAMPLIN FIGHTER MUSEUM on Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona, the Focke-Wulf 190D-13 is in the restoration shop of Dave Goss' Gosshawk Unlimited where major repairs are being performed to return the 'Dora 13' to airworthy condition.

Avalon Airshow 2001

Visitors to the 2001 Avalon Airshow held near Melbourne Victoria, braved traffic jams, unbearable heat and the inevitable sore neck to help the RAAF celebrate it's 80th birthday in style. The week leading up to the 16th and 17th of February was dedicated to trade visitors and the high-powered dealings and announcements associated with these events.
